The first part of the evening belongs to the jazz teachers and students of the Cité de la Musique of Marseille. The teachers of the jazz department of La Cité will play their own compositions and arrangements.

Magic Malik Orchestra

Nourished by his passion for traveling, meeting new people and fusion experiments, flutist Magic Malik blows a fresh and tonic wind over jazz at the head of his orchestra. His compositions are based on his own XP system. The musicians accompanying Magic Malik enrich his musical universe. He has explored all music styles and participated in the revitalization of French jazz. For this concert, he will play with the old refrains we tend to burst into.

Part I : Esperanza Spalding  Quartet

A 26-year-old powerfully gifted musician, bass player and singer from Oregon, Esperanza Spalding can boast she has begun an exceptional career. A child prodigy, she enters the Berklee College of Music at the age of 16. In the 4 following years, she discovers jazz, double bass, clubs and blues, and at only 20 she becomes the yougest music teacher at Berklee ! She goes on tour with Joe Lovano in Mexico, accompanies Pat Metheny, Michel Camilo, Patti Austin, Regina Carter, Dave Samuels or Terri Lyn Carrington. She produces her first Juno album herself in 2006. Her second album, Esperanza, is released in May 2008, just before she becomes famous worldwide with a performance in front of Barack Obama at the White House. The music of this excellent double bass player is light and playful. Her original compositions are often spiced with Latin accents.

Part II : Al Jarreau Sextet

Al Jarreau was a psychologist at a rehab center in California and used to be a singer in jazz clubs at the same time. He recorder his first album in 1965. As a singer, his vocal qualities allow him to adjust to various musical styles, from jazz to R&B and pop music. He met success with the albums We Got By in 1975 and first of all Breakin’ Away in 1981. With Tenderness (1994), Al Jarreau’s style clearly turns to jazz. He wins numerous music awards -five Grammys- and comes back in 2006 with guitarist George Benson for a joint album called Givin’ it Up.
Al Jarreau is addicted to the stage, which he sometimes shares with Jon Hendricks or Manhattan Transfer. He wants to remain faithful to the spirit of jazz, even though he does not refrain from adding some accents of funk, pop or soul music to his sound.

Part I : Mor Trio & two guests [percussion]

Born in 1983, Omri Mor begins to play the piano at 7 and is soon attracted to various musical styles. He studies classical music with Benjamin Oren and Asaf Zohar and jazz piano playing with Slava Ganelin and Arnie Lawrence. He gives live concerts in Israel with artists such as Avishai Cohen, Omer Avital or Eli Debrigi. He collaborates with people like Marlon Browden, Marcus Baylor, Philip Harper… He gives regular live performances in jazz festivals, but he also carries out some unexpected experiments with the Maghreb Orchestra or the Israeli Andalus Orchestra.
His eclectic background from classical to jazz, Afro-Cuban and Latin music, have shaped his playing characterized by a rarely equaled musical diversity.

Part II  : Freedom Band : Chick Corea, Kenny Garrett, Chris McBride, Roy Haynes

Chick Corea is a jazz and jazz-rock pianist who became famous thanks to his experiments in the 70’s. He is on the long list of talented artists discovered by Miles Davis, with whom he had worked. He made a name for himself when he played in the American latin fusion jazz band Return to Forever. But it is in 1976 that My spanish heart, considered by critics as one of his best albums, is released. From 1981 to 1986 he reaches the summit of his art, plays with the finest musicians, and creates one of the greatest fusion bands : the Electric Band.
Chick Corea has won ten Grammys to date. He will conduct a quartet called The Freedom Band and made of various major artists such as saxophonist Kenny Garrett, bassist Christian McBride and one of the last living masters of drums, Roy Haynes.

Part I : Ibrahim Maalouf Quintet

Ibrahim Maalouf was born on December 5, 1980 in Beyrut, Lebanon. He begins to study the trumpet with his father very early. Then he enters the Superior Conservatory of Paris, and during the five years of his curriculum he scoops three international prizes, one European first prize and four National first prizes, such as the first prize of the National Trumpet Competition in Washington Fairfax, Virginia, United States. He also receives the title of Laureate of the Cziffra Fundation and Laureate of the Autumn Music Festival of Young Musicians. He has gained international recognition as a trumpet player and as an oriental jazz music composer.
He has released 2 solo albums in his name : Diasporas (2005) and Diachronism (2009)

Part II  : Richard Bona Group

Born in 1967 in Mintra, a small village of Cameroon, Richard Bona begins to play balafon at the age of 4. He also learns to play the guitar on his own. Later in Douala, a jazz club owner introduces him to the music of Jaco Pastorius. Then he decides to learn playing bass guitar by himself. In 1989 he leaves for Europe and takes lessons for 7 years. He spends time in the Parisian jazz clubs where he meets Didier Lockwood, Marc Ducret, the African musicians Manu Dibango and Salif Keita. In 1995 he leaves for New Tork where he goes to every major jazz spots and works with Michael et Randy Brecker, Pat Metheny, Larry Corryell, Mike Stern, Steve Gadd, Joe Zawinul and singer Harry Belafonte. He is regarded as one of the best bassist of his time, and also gives glimpses of talents in composition and singing. His new album reveals the multiple sources of inspiration he has gathered by traveling and meeting new people at the four corners of the world.

Part I : Yaron Herman & Ambrose Akinmusire

Yaron Herman was born on 12 July 1981 in Tel Aviv. He begins to learn the piano at the age of 16. He goes to Paris at 19, where he makes a name for himself in the Parisian musical scene after several encounters. His precocity, his talent and his enthusiasm are amazing. He is unanimously chosen as the winner of the Sunside’s New Talent Trophy by the jury. Yaron Herman gives his first solo concerts in Europe, South America, the United States, and is the first jazz pianist who played in the Forbidden City in Beijing, China. In 2007, he is elected Jazz Talent by the ADAMI (Society for the collective management of the rights of performing artists, France). He collaborates with Michel Portal, Bertrand Chamayou, Lars Danielsson, Yael Naim, and even Sting’s guitarist Dominic Miller. In 2008 he is elected Instrumental Revelation of the Year at the French Victories of Music.

Part II  : Manu Katché quartet + Guests Marion Rampal & Sylvain Luc

Born in a family of musicians, Manu Katché chooses the piano at the age of 7. He receives numerous awards throughout his career. The latest award was in 2004. A complete artist, French musician, author, composer and interpreter Manu Katché has released several albums and composed numerous film soundtracks. However, he is most famous as a drummer and has gained international recognition for it.
In september 2004, Manu Katché creates his own group : Manu Katché Tendances, and goes back on stage with electro-jazz pieces composed by himself for a world tour. Tonight, eclectic guitarist and instinctive, instant improviser Sylvain Luc will accompany him.
With her deep and jazzy voice, Marion Rampal from the Compagnie Nine Spirit of Marseille is the regional guest of this evening.

Part I : Biréli Lagrène trio inviteS Didier Lockwood, a tribute to Django Reinhardt

In 2010, we celebrate the century of the birth of Django Reinhardt. The Festival pays him a tribute with gypsy jazz guitar genius Biréli Lagrène and violonist Didier Lockwood together on stage.
Biréli Lagrène began playing the guitar at the age of 4. And at 12, he already plays Django Reinhardt’s standards. He experiments with several styles : traditional jazz with artists like Benny Goodman, fusion jazz with Jaco Pastorius, acoustic jazz with various artists. Many consider him to be the rightful representative of Django Reinhardt.
Didier Lockwood needs no introduction. Discovered by Stéphane Grapelli, he releases album after album and collaborates with a huge number of artists such as Martial Solal, Gordon Beck, Marcus Miller, Elvin Jones, Claude Nougaro or even Barbara. He wins a prize at the French Victories of Music and gets a gold album. His secret hides in his will to explore all horizons.

Part II : Maceo Parker + Orchestre

As a hint to our first edition in 2000, the Festival invites Maceo and his great orchestra for a funky and playful 2010 final set.
World renown saxophonist Maceo Parker made a name for himself in the 60’s as late James Brown’s sideman. He has dived into many a universe with great talent and friendly manner. He takes inspiration from Hank Crawford and King Curtis. For more than 20 years, he accompanies the King of Soul while he develops his own projects. A worshipped musician, he is able to play up to 300 concerts a year. He joins Prince’s band during the 2000’s. Maceo Parker is an exceptional artist. He has left unforgettable footprints on the history of funk throughout his rich career.
